The original version of this bas-relief is located in the South Gallery at Angkor Wat in the East section, depicting ‘Heavens and Hells.’ The wall has three layers: the upper level represents Heaven, the middle layer represents Earth where the soldiers’ bas-relief is situated, and the bottom layer represents Hells. Suryavarman II, a Khmer king who ruled from 1113 AD
to 1145/1150 AD, commissioned these soldiers as part of his extensive military campaigns in the east against the Chams, a kingdom in present-day central and southern Vietnam.
