Questions & Answers
QUESTION: Will someone show me how to use the wheel and teach pottery making if I subscribe an Open Studio membership?
ANSWER: No. The Open Studio membership does not include any classes. It is not for total beginners, but for people who already know a bit about working with clay and are capable of practicing on their own. If you’re new to wheel pottery you can focus on modelling, or you can start with our pottery class* or get the Potters Privilege Card**, which gives you 10 pottery classes at a lower price. The guidance you will get as a Monthly Pass holder is the “Essential Guide to Ceramics”, a document also including the tips and rules of the studio that any pass holder must be able to read, understand and abide by.

QUESTION: Can I come with my children and make it a family activity?
ANSWER: As stated in the previous answer, all pass holders must be able to read, understand, and abide by the “Essential Guide to Ceramics.” While there isn’t a strict age restriction, this offer is intended for people who have some previous experience and a good understanding of ceramics. It is not designed for children. We recommend to book our Mug Drawing Workshop *** or our monthly Kiddo Clay Saturdays ****, a new offer that we will start from July 2025. You can follow our facebook page to know when the next one is.

QUESTION: Once I am registered, do I need to book or call before coming?
ANSWER: You don’t need a formal booking to use your Monthly Pass for self-practice. You can come any day between 8 AM and 6:30 PM. However, please remember that group pottery classes get priority for wheel access. If you want to check how busy we are, especially for using a wheel, you can always contact us via our Telegram group or phone call (+855 17 843 014). This helps us plan your creative leisure time better, particularly during peak tourist seasons.
QUESTION: How can I get the glaze color I want for my pieces?
ANSWER: We’ll have a selection of glaze colors available on our dedicated “glazing” days, which are Thursdays and Saturdays as shown on our weekly schedule. The specific colors offered will be based on votes from polls posted beforehand in our Telegram group. While several colors will be available, please remember to use only one color of glaze per piece and avoid mixing colors, as this can cause problems during firing. For the same reason, we do not accept glazes from outside.
QUESTION: I don’t have Telegram, how will I get updates from the studio?
ANSWER: Our dedicated Telegram Group is our preferred communication channel for the Monthly Pass holders. It enables us to follow up with the firings and create weekly polls to know which glazes to prepare according to the needs and wishes of everyone. However, you can refer to our weekly schedule below, and contact us via phone call and whatsapp (+855 17 843 014) or when you are already onsite for any request related to your pieces.
QUESTION: Can I bring my own clay from outside?
ANSWER: No, for quality and safety reasons, we do not allow outside clay in our studio. We provide locally sourced stoneware clay, which is specifically chosen to work well with our glazes and kilns. This ensures consistent firing results and prevents potential damage to our equipment from unknown clay bodies.
QUESTION: Can I fire my pieces myself?
ANSWER: No. Our trained staff handles firing activities to ensure safety and proper kiln operation. You just need to inform our staff when your pieces are completely dry and ready, and they’ll take care of the firing process according to our weekly schedule. Remember, a firing fee applies for all pieces and is due beforehand.
Furthermore, the firing is not possible in a home appliance such as a kitchen oven. To become robust and durable, stoneware must be fired at a very high temperature. This process, called vitrification, is what makes the clay body strong and waterproof. Our professional kilns reach temperatures between 1,200°C and 1,300°C (approximately 2,192°F to 2,372°F) to ensure your pieces are properly fired and can withstand daily use. That is why a regular kitchen oven is not proper nor safe for ceramics making.
QUESTION: How do I know when my fired pieces are ready to pick up?
ANSWER: Our staff will notify you directly via our Telegram group once your pieces have completed their firing process and are ready for pickup. We don’t have a specific pickup day; you can collect them during our regular studio hours and within two weeks. Pieces not collected after two weeks will be considered unwanted and placed in our “Lost and Found” or donation-based area.
QUESTION: What if I don’t like my pieces after they’ve been fired?
ANSWER: Ceramics is an art where the final result can be a surprise! We can’t offer refunds if you’re not happy with how your pieces turn out after firing. Our low fees are calculated to your advantage and we encourage you to embrace experimentation. Remember that every piece, even an unexpected one, is a part of your learning journey in clay.
QUESTION: How much will it cost me in total per month with the Monthly Pass?
ANSWER: The base cost for the Monthly Pass is $25 per month. On top of this, you’ll pay a firing fee which is $6 per kilo with a minimum of $1 per piece. Here is an example: A typical ceramic mug weighs about 300 grams. If you make 2 mugs per week, that’s 8 mugs fired in a month:
8 mugs x 300g = 2.4 kilos
2.4 kilos x $6/kilo = $14.40
Total Pass: $25 + Firing Fees $14.40 = Only $39.40 for that month!
This is an estimate, as your firing fee will vary depending on the exact weight of the pieces you complete and have fired each month.
QUESTION: Can I make very small/ very big pieces?
ANSWER: If you plan on making unusually sized pieces, please talk to our staff first. All pieces are fired in shared kilns. Large pieces can only be fired when there is enough space, as we also need to fire pieces from our pottery classes and our own production on a daily basis. Very small pieces require extra care, especially during kiln setup, as the glaze must not touch the kiln’s surfaces. Please remember there’s a minimum charge of $1 per unit, which includes small items like beads or pendants.
QUESTION: Can I keep my unfinished pieces at the studio? How long can they be stored, and is there a limit?
ANSWER: You can store both your greenware (unfired) and bisqueware (first-fired) pieces at our studio. To keep unfinished greenware moist for continued work on the next day, cover it with a damp cloth and store it in the shade. Please let our staff know before you leave so we can help store your pieces properly overnight. Please note, we are not responsible for stored pieces. While there’s no strict limit, be mindful of shared space. Our staff will notify you if you have an unusually large number of pieces. To ensure sufficient storage space for everyone we request that greenware and bisqueware be fired respectively within one week, and recommend that glazed bisqueware be final-fired within 4 days to protect the glaze from dust and moisture.
QUESTION: Can I leave my own tools here?
ANSWER: Yes, you’re welcome to bring, use and leave your own tools at the studio. However, we don’t have dedicated personal storage spaces for monthly pass holders and each personal item left in the studio is the responsibility of its owner.
QUESTION: What if I accidentally break something in the studio?
ANSWER: We understand that accidents can happen. If you accidentally break a tool or piece of equipment, please inform our staff immediately. Depending on the nature and cost of the damage, there may be a fee to cover repair or replacement. We appreciate your honesty and care for our shared resources.
