Description

A Rare Vintage Art Print

Discover the exceptional Les Ruines d’Angkor poster, which was originally created by George Groslier in 1911. Specifically, George Groslier (1887-1945) designed this important artwork. Because he was born in Imperial Cambodia to French parents, he held a deep connection to the region. Although he grew up in France, Groslier always recalled his birthplace fondly.

The Artist’s Journey

In 1910, the French government commissioned the 23-year-old artist to return to his homeland. At that time, his mission involved studying Cambodian architecture and anthropology. Additionally, Groslier worked as a painter, writer, historian, and curator. Through these various roles, he sought to preserve the arts, culture, and history of the Khmer Empire.

It was during this early period that Groslier created the Les Ruines d’Angkor poster. Primarily, he intended to promote French travel to his beloved Cambodia.

Respecting the Culture

For instance, the image features traditional dancers and worshippers at the temple entrance. They greet the sun as it illuminates the sacred site. Fortunately, Groslier respectfully, accurately, and lovingly depicted this scene. As a result, he avoided a voyeuristic view of an “exotic” locale.

Furthermore, Groslier believed firmly in preserving indigenous culture. Because of this passion, he eventually founded the National Museum of Cambodia and the School of Cambodian Arts.

George Groslier’s Legacy

Initially, Groslier fought for France in WWI. However, he returned to Cambodia to raise his family. Subsequently, he dedicated his life to the study and preservation of Cambodian traditions. Tragically, Japanese forces captured him during WWII. Ultimately, he passed away as a prisoner of war.

In summary, Groslier spent his life sharing Cambodia’s beauty with the Western world. Therefore, you can clearly see this dedication in the Les Ruines d’Angkor poster. We are thrilled to offer this historic print in our gallery.
